Without discussion, one of the greatest concern today in the international arena, and more in Europe, for the sake of what is happening within our very borders armed conflict, it is Russian Ukrainian armed conflict. This confrontation literally fraternal, since confronts compatriots officially is played by the pro-Russian Ukrainian army troops and civilians. Although there are many voices that warn of the direct participation of the Russian army in the conflict.
Many of the leading specialists in these fields do not hesitate: the first few soldiers who took over without a shot Crimea are Russian special forces and airborne units, and even some talk of the famous Spetsnaz, elite commands . The expert from the Russian world research center RUSI (Royal United Services), Igor Sutyagin, is more blunt. “The units deployed to block the Ukrainian guard (in Perevalne) were Spetsnaz” said the expert told AFP.
These brave soldiers “are specialized in recognizing cross and sabotage”. According to him, “marine riflemen were supported by at least two brigades of the Black Sea and Baltic Sea”.
The expert from the organization of military analysis (Jane’s intelligence review), Matthew Clements, is less concrete on units in the southern peninsula of Ukraine. “The Russians made many efforts to lower dir prevented identification. However, in Crimea there will undoubtedly elite airborne units and, for all we know, also special forces,” he said. A third Western expert, speaking on condition of anonymity claimed that “200%, the modus operandi fits the purest tradition of the Spetsnaz, specialists in creating confusion and even chaos, as part of a psychological action.”
The images of unidentified soldiers acting on behalf of the pro-Russian Crimean authorities were seen around the world. In his uniform symbol to reveal their identity, origin, or military grade body was removed. And their faces covered not seen more than the eyes.
Armed with Kalashnikov rifles, were well disciplined to take their positions, without uttering a word and without the use of weapons, strategic locations around airports, government buildings and barracks of the Ukrainian army. Military transport aircraft, helicopters and warships took them up there. Moscow refrained from making the slightest comment about the forces on the ground.
Silence is the norm when it comes to the Spetsnaz, separate unit of the Directorate General Information Staff of the Russian armed forces. His performances are usually surrounded the greatest secrecy. They are specialists in sabotage, disposal and making and strategic objectives, regularly operate behind enemy lines, in uniform or civilian clothes, and are heirs of the NKVD group, which multiplied the blows to the Nazis during the Second World War.
The organization of human rights group Amnesty International accused of war crimes in Chechnya, and also participated in conflicts in Afghanistan and Georgia. They also had an active role in the release of hostages the Moscow Dubrovka theater in 2002 and a school in Beslan, North Ossetia, in 2004. In both cases, the operations were carried out by Chechen separatists and both the balance intervention was pretty bloody.
Spetsnaz: the inside story
Spetsnaz is the nomenclature used to target groups of the Russian Army covert operations. These enigmatic and mysterious special forces, feared by the first world during the Cold War, still mark the actions of these elite corps in the XXI century. His strong training and severe selection technique makes them one of the groups most reliable in the world covert operations.
After the end of the Second World War, and as a solution to the trend that had emerged from the hatching units elite corps, the high command of the former USSR, decided to create their own special forces. They saw the light of this, mid-50s the Spetsnaz, an elite unit of well trained that today very little is known. That this because, the information related to these special forces, has always jealously guarded, thus increasing expectation and social fear of an elite virtually unknown.
With everything and that, at least until the conflict in Crimea, the disappearance of the former Soviet Union, had marked a before and after in the history of these special forces. In this sense, under the government of the USSR, the Spetsnaz was conceived as a specialized sabotage operations, infiltration and reconnaissance behind enemy lines unit.
During the years in which I saw the Cold War, were the most belligerent of communist troops. At that time, many of their activities were focused on locating and destroying vital installations and sites such as missile platforms, barracks or telecommunications systems, among other prominent operations.
These actions had the sur- prize factor and ran on stealth, so the soldiers of the Western bloc should always be prepared for unexpected appearance. However, this was not the only mission of this specialized in sabotage body. Among its more specific work was also threatening NATO officials and prominent members of the capitalist bloc satellite states. Nevertheless, his actions in Western Europe during the Cold War were rather low. Quite the opposite in Afghanistan, a country that was invaded by the USSR in 1979 and whose invasion had a prominent role Spetsnaz soldiers.
This was before Spetsnaz. But there is also a later stage that starts with the breakup of the Soviet republics block and extending to the present day. Even before the conflict in Ukraine, the Spetsnaz had initiated a restructuring process in order to become similar to the acclaimed US Delta Force and British SAS unit.
Currently, all operations are subject to the guidelines of the Directorate of Intelligence of the Soviet General Staff (GRU). At press time, the military activity in the conflict is in a state of uneasy calm. Despite the agreements ceasefire in Minsk, in Ukraine continues a confrontation, classified by some as “civil war.”
The human body has no limits
… There is only psychological barriers. “This is a top of this elite corps. And for him to enter, applicants must overcome one of the most demanding processes of the planet and hard selection. Obviously, little is known of the selection system Spetsnaz, albeit that the soldiers who pass the tests, receive instruction in assaults on vehicles, anti-terrorist actions, urban combat and combat. Indeed, in the latter, Spetsnaz soldiers are real specialists. Moreover, much of the maneuvers are performed with explosives and live ammunition, which causes the Spetsnaz is one of the special forces with the highest rate of casualties in their selection process. Each unit consists of a team of 15 soldiers acting under the orders of an officer. These soldiers are trained in specialized fields such as handling explosives, precision shooting, using transmissions and reconnaissance.
Among the little that is known of the weapons used by the soldiers of Spetsnaz include their assault rifles AK-74, AN-94 and AK-103, its guns 9mm silencer and its great expertise in the use of weapons white. In this regard, members of this unit have a special combat knife called NR-2, which by driving an automatic device is able to throw the sheet with enormous strength and is often used for short distances. Along with this arsenal, the SVD Dragunov (classic sniper rifle sovié- tico), the RPG-16, SA-14 anti-aircraft devices and heavy sniper rifle OSV -96 also appears. Besides all these weapons, Spetsnaz members also receive instruction to effectively manage other foreign weapons. Would handle an M16 / AR15, or HK 416 HK PM5, no problem.
The set of available weaponry expands significantly for Spetsnaz members from the Marine Corps. These same forces also are equipped with the SSP-1, a sub gun aquatic underwater whose scope is between 7 and 17 meters. These soldiers have an assault rifle capable of firing underwater with an acceptable range. Despite having attempted on several occasions (during the Cold War) against US bases spread around the globe, currently the Spetsnaz Russian Navy has adopted a similar to that of their former “enemies” Seals structure.
On the other hand, after the disappearance of KGB (Soviet secret service), the Russian government decided to create two elite units to inherit some extent part of the shares previously developed by the KGB. These two units, fully operational today, are referred to Alfa Group and Beta Group. Both bodies consist of volunteers from the Spetsnaz soldiers and their main mission is to fight terrorism. The Alfa Group develops its operations inside Russia, so we could see them in action in conflict against Chechen terrorism, such as the kidnapping of Beslan. Meanwhile, the Beta Group operates outside Russia, so that its operations focus on conflict zones such as Chechnya or Georgia. As former Spetsnaz soldiers, members of these two groups are well trained in precision shooting, driving at high speed, unarmed combat, etc.
It has been more than half a century since the appearance of the first Spetsnaz and yet, these special forces continue starring international Actualizad and thus arousing interest and curiosity, not only fans of weapons, but all elite forces of the world. The aura of mystery and secrecy that surrounds this unit, coupled with rigorous selection process must overcome his men, made from the bodies of elite Russian army ‘Spetsnaz’ special force feared and respected by society. May we never see each other face to them.
